Before the advent of the digital age was born, there were few media outlets that could be viewed by a large number of people. Before the digital revolution, the majority of media consumed by people was owned by corporations like newspapers, magazines, broadcasters and production houses.

The advent of online media has transformed the way businesses conduct business. Now anyone can produce media and share it on platforms that can be distributed to an unlimited number of customers. This expansion of reach is referred to as «Owned Media.» When properly utilized, Owned media can be one of the most powerful marketing tools a company can use.

The ease of sharing and creating content can create problems. Internet memes, unauthorized song use, and common Internet memes are all examples of how the lack of clear copyright laws can make it difficult to manage online media.

This definition goes beyond traditional media, such as TV and radio to include companies which produce and promote their own content, like YouTube videos, podcasts, and electronic books. A digital media company’s aim is to engage their audience and grow the brand by using social media and word-ofmouth. These goals can be achieved by utilizing paid advertising through platforms such as PPC, Facebook ads and Google Adwords. Effective social media marketing requires an enormous amount of effort to be successful.
